Archbishop Collins says he's no shrinking violet

Archbishop Thomas Collins says he won't be a shrinking violet when he takes over as head of Toronto's archdiocese early next year.

He'll be both visible and vocal on many of Canada's most divisive issues, says the archbishop of Edmonton, who was tapped by the Vatican last week to replace 76-year-old Cardinal Aloysius Ambrozic, whom some critics have deemed too rigid.

Collins has been described as easygoing and scholarly. But he said in an interview he won't veer from the Vatican's position on moral issues and will continue to be a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage and abortion.

Collins said he sees it as not only his job, but the job of all Catholics, to be "very much engaged in the wider society in which we find ourselves. I think that's essential.''

That's all fine and well, but will he actually DO something.

Actions speak louder than words. If he doesn't start disciplining some politicians, he can talk all he likes, that's not going to change a whole lot. The faithful won't take those words seriously until they know there are conseuqences to ignoring Catholic teaching.
