Pope Makes Christmas Appeal for Children

VATICAN CITY Dec 24, 2006 (AP)— Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Christmas Midnight Mass in the splendor of St. Peter's Basilica early Monday with an appeal for abused children around the world, including child soldiers, beggars and others deprived of sustenance and love.

"The child of Bethlehem directs our gaze toward all children who suffer and are abused in the world, the born and the unborn," Benedict said in his homily, referring to the church's stand against abortion.

I'm glad the Pope spoke out for children, born and unborn. I'm glad he's reminding the faithful of their duty.

I just wish a lay Catholic could make a similarly widely reported appeal to the bishops to stand up for the Catholic Faith and discipline those who behave in a scandalous fashion, especially in voting for laws that contradict the Catholic Faith.
