Doctor guilty of illegal abortion

In the first abortion trial in NSW in over 20 years, abortion doctor Suman Sood was today found guilty of performing an illegal abortion, but cleared her of the manslaughter of a premature baby in May 2002.
The doctor had been accused of giving a young woman an abortion drug at her Fairfield clinic, then sending her home, and asking her to return the next morning.
The woman gave birth on the toilet at home overnight.
The baby boy, who was born at 23 weeks' gestation, was pronounced dead in hospital about four hours later.
The decision was reached by a jury of three men and eight women after about 16 hours of deliberation about a series of complex medical and legal questions.
