Pakistani clerics, scholars want pope removed

From CNN:

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) -- About 1,000 clerics and religious scholars at a meeting in eastern Pakistan demanded the removal of the pope for making "insulting remarks" against Islam, and warned the West of severe consequences if it didn't change its stance regarding Islam.

Pope Benedict XVI "should be removed from his position immediately for encouraging war and fanning hostility between various faiths" and "making insulting remarks" against Islam, said a joint statement issued by the clerics and scholars at the end of their one-day convention in the eastern city of Lahore.

Removal? Removal? Are these people that ignorant??? There are a 1000 religious scholars at a meeting in Pakistan, and no one objected and said "but in Catholicism, the pope reigns until he resigns or dies"?

This is what I was talking about in a previous post when I said that they do not do interreligious dialogue very well. They don't even research their subject.

I expect this kind of non-sense from everyday people-- Muslim or not. A lot of people are ignorant about Catholicism. But I'd expect a little more knowledge from religious scholars, especially on a point that is so rudimentary.

Emperors have tried removing popes. It doesn't work. The anti-popes are never officially recognized.

Hopefully this non-sense will lead to correction and perhaps these hardcore Muslims will learn something.
