MP wins first battle on abortion reform

MP Nadine Dorries has secured a Ten Minute Rule Bill in the House of Commons on Tuesday on the issue of the termination of pregnancy.

Last week Bedfordshire on Sunday revealed that Mrs Dorries, MP for Mid Bedfordshire, had resigned from a select committee to allow her to concentrate on reducing the the time-limit on abortion.

Mrs Dorries said, “The objective of my Termination of Pregnancy Bill is to reduce the time limit for legal termination of pregnancy from 24 to 21 weeks.

“The Bill also aims to introduce a ten-day cooling-off period after a woman has first made contact with a medical practitioner about a termination.

“It is vitally important that the principle of informed consent is established before any woman makes the decision to terminate a pregnancy.
