Atlantic Canadians oppose most abortions

New Brunswickers want better access to abortion services, according to the results of a public opinion poll conducted in December.

The poll by Omnifacts Bristol Research found 57 per cent of respondents believe that abortions should be available in medical clinics, said Maryse Courville, a senior research consultant with the firm.

New Brunswickers were asked if they felt women had the right to choose when it came to having an abortion.

"The largest segment of the population, in fact, the majority of 57 per cent of New Brunswickers, believe that abortions should be available in medical clinics to provide greater access," said Courville

Talk about gross manipulation of numbers.

While it may be true that 57 per cent of the population may want freer access to abortion in clinics, it does not reveal their attitudes to abortion.

It simply speaks to WHERE they would allow abortions to be done.

Atlantic Canadians are most hesitant to approve abortions when the woman says she's not ready to have a child, at 18 per cent, according to the poll. Only 13 per cent say they would approve an abortion for someone who is financially unable to afford the child.

Rosella Melanson, head of the Advisory Council on the Status of Women, said the poll will be given to Health Minister Mike Murphy when he meets with women's groups later this week.

"Compared to other provinces, New Brunswick is conservative," Melanson said. "But even in New Brunswick, it is a majority that agrees that women should have the right to choose."

Uh....82 per cent of New Brunssickers don't favour abortion when the woman says she's not ready to raise the child; 87 per cent oppose abortions for financial reasons.

Those two reasons are among the most common cited for killing a fetus.

That's pro-choice???

What it tells me is that Atlantic Canadians oppose most abortions.Check the questioning: why didn't they ask: Under what circumstances do you think abortion should be legal?

According to a LifeCanada poll (October 2006), only 21% of Atlantic Canadians believe abortion should be tax-funded.

What that tells me is that Atlantic Canadians would not be keen to have abortions funded in clinics even if they were accessible. So the government should just get out of taht business.

There's just no getting around this: Atlantic Canadians don't want much to do with abortion. That's the truth.

I hope the New Brunswick Minister of Health realizes this.

I can't imagine that a legislature where forty per cent of the members are avowed pro-lifers will be keen to allow legislation or regulation that will force the taxpayer to shoulder this burden.

Perhaps this is why the pro-aborts are heading to court. I think they will lose, though. There is simply no mandate for the government to pay for any one medical procedure.
