Extreme Preemies: Hope for the future

The Boston Globe had a lengthy article on premature babies.

Dr. Joseph Vacanti, the chief general surgeon at the Massuchusetts General Hospital for Children is attempting to develop an artificial placenta.

I find that very exciting. With an artificial placenta, we could theoretically break the 20-week barrier.

I wonder if some day we could even save 1st trimester fetuses. Of course that would be decades off in the future. Vacanti still has innumerable obstacles to overcome in creating his artificial placenta. But, saving 20-week-old fetuses may not be unthinkable in the future.
