Inventer of 3D ultrasound says: reduce UK abortion time limit

Though I perform these scans every day, I am still overcome by the excitement and the wonder of the foetus that is learning to be a baby. By 20 weeks it smiles, makes crying expressions and sucks its thumb. At 23 weeks, it begins to open its eyes and develops quite complex patterns of behaviour. It can survive outside the womb.

Some claim that terminations at more than 20 weeks are rarely performed - but more than 2,000 abortions a year for social reasons is not rare. To me, it is a step too far to be pulling these babies out of the womb. They are too developed.

I have been accused of sentimentality, but the fact is that, in these images, foetuses are baby-like. To me it is almost barbaric to abort foetuses between 20 and 24 weeks. In fact, the procedure is so unattractive and distressing that few doctors will perform the operation after 20 weeks.

Wonder, you say? Why you're just a fetus fetishist! How dare you attribute human qualities to the fetus! Barbaric! Huh! Sticking a needle inside a baby's heart is nothing compared to being FORCED to wait for the baby to be born. Barbaric, indeed!

Who cares if a baby suffers. If the woman suffers, the baby's pain is justified, no matter how cruel the method of abortion. Tough luck for him! "Fetuses are not that important".

(That was sarcasm, in case you missed it.)
