Quebec this fall: Government bill to allow fetuses under 500 grams to be buried

According to Cyberpresse, a government bill will be presented to stop the practice of treating fetuses under 500 grams as simply bio-medical waste.

This comes in the wake of a growing trend of burying fetuses and arranging funerals for them.

Monika Dunn, of the "Fédération du Québec pour le planning des naissances" (Family Planning) says there is a risk that this could lead to more juridical recognition of the unborn child.

Wouldn't you know it.

I find it absolutely ridiculous. The fetus belongs to the woman. Shouldn't she have some legal right to bury him? If it really is "my body, my choice"--and the fetus is part of the woman's body (legally)-- shouldn't that be a choice?

In any event, it's already being done by many hospitals. This would only create a legal framework for this practice. I can imagine that there are bona fide public health issues in dealing with the proper disposal of a body.
