SpaceX launches first commercial rocket into orbit

LOS ANGELES - An Internet entrepreneur's latest effort to make space launch more affordable paid off Sunday when his commercial rocket, carrying a dummy payload, was lofted into orbit from the South Pacific.

Now why can't we do this in Canada?

I believe that Canada has to explore developing a space program or industry. We have to keep in mind where economic expansion lays. And I am certain space will be part of future economic expansion.

I would prefer it be private companies that do this, but I think if no one is going to do the job, then the government should intervene. Canada cannot afford to be left out of the space race. We have to develop our own system of launching satellites and manned flights in space so that we don't have to rely on other countries.

Otherwise, we will be left behind.
