Isn't it time we elected our Governor-General?

The fate of our government rests in the hands of an unelected head of state. Of all the things that bug me about this prospective coalition, this fact is the most irritating. Michaelle Jean was appointed by Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin. The people had no say in her selection. Given the kind of power she wields, I think it's high time that her job be an elected post,

Why couldn't we have a one-person, one-vote election (with run-offs) for the GG?

I know the main objection. Her appointment is constitutionally defined. But there's no reason why the Prime Minister could not choose to appoint the winner of an election.

I feel it is patently unfair that the Governor-General is answerable to no one for behaviour. If we are disatisfied with her choices, there is nothing we the people can do about it. The anti-democratic nature of that office should be patently obvious. It should be every Canadian's right to vote for the people who govern them.
