Myself, I don't call myself a "conservative" because I got burned on ideological labels when I was left-wing. In those days, I couldn't call myself a socialist because I was pro-life, no matter how left-wing I was.
I've hated ideological purity since then. I'm right-wing. If somebody wants to call me a conservative, I'm fine with that, but it's not a label I use because I reserve the right to dissent from prevailing views.,
