China plans tougher laws on sex-selection abortion

China will be spelling out the punishments for sex-selection abortions. you think the fact that the punishments were not stated in the law might have something to do with the fact they're still practiced?

I wonder if anyone will be sent to jail for this crime. That might be interesting in light of the recent controversy on whether women who abort should be given jailtime.

I love this snippet from the China Daily News:

Though sex-selection is banned by the Population and Family Planning Law and the Law on Maternal and Infant Health
That is a hoot. I wonder what law has to say about sex selection abortions and women's health.

Another thing that made me smile:

However, the traditional idea that more children bring more happiness still prevails in rural areas, challenging the country's population control efforts.

Those crazy, backward Chinese peasants love their kids. What a concept.
